The Jose Carlos Schwarz Foundation aims to have an impact on various spheres of Guinean society, but also abroad, by recognizing the socio-cultural role of José Carlos Schwarz's estate and, consequently, enhancing the history of Guinea-Bissau.

Goals:

The José Carlos Schwarz Foundation aims to strengthen the people's connection with their historical and cultural heritage. This social contribution aims to enrich the knowledge of new generations about one of the most important figures in Guinea-Bissau's culture. A people's culture is what identifies them most, and José Carlos Schwarz is an excellent example of the Guinean soul.
The JCS Foundation regularly proposes the creation of cultural activities, the promotion of a taste for culture, especially among young people, contributing to the promotion and enhancement of education and human development, especially among the most vulnerable groups.

Remna Schwarz

Vice-President and MF
Born in Senegal, Remna Schwarz, youngest son of José Carlos Schwarz, has lived in countries such as Congo, Mali, Senegal, Guinea, Cape Verde, France, Cuba and even the USA.
Singer, songwriter, and producer, Remna performed at the 2018 South By Southwest Festival in Texas, the largest music showcase on the American continent, receiving great reviews, including from Wobean Music, which called his music "Great Pan African Music".

Naman Schwarz

2nd Vice-President and MF
Born in 1971 in Guinea-Bissau, Naman Schwarz is the eldest son of José Carlos Schwarz. From an early age, he showed a passion for singing, imitating his father and interpreting his songs.
Naman Schwarz has a solid international education and has dedicated the last 25 years to a successful career in tourism, hospitality, and entertainment. At the same time, he has sporadically participated in performances by fellow musicians and artists, acting as a guest singer.

Teresa Schwarz

President and MF
Maria Teresa Loff F. Schwarz, born in Senegal in 1949, is the daughter of Cape Verdean parents and has a multifaceted and international career. She completed her secondary education and training in various fields in both Senegal and Portugal. Her professional career began in 1971 in Bissau, where she worked as an employee of the Lloyd's Sotto Maior Agency. After Guinea-Bissau's independence, she served as Secretary to the President of the Republic.
Her diplomatic career has taken her to countries such as Cuba, Senegal, and the United States. She was also a European Union official in Cape Verde. She is a writer.

Luis Vicente

With extensive experience in managing investment projects and European and national funding, this manager is an expert in finance and public policy. In addition to his work in finance, he also works as a consultant on international projects and is a senior sports manager. In addition, he is the founder of the Nimba Art Gallery and Nimba Edições, excelling in initiatives related to art and publishing.

Jorge Carvalho

Founder Member
He is a renowned director with a portfolio of award-winning documentaries, including "KORA", an exploration of the roots of the mythical Guinean instrument. His films have been screened at several international festivals and "KORA" was awarded Best Documentary at the Cape Verde International Film Festival in 2014. In addition, Jorge has a solid career as a video editor, contributing to RTP programs and documentaries for over two decades.

Paulo Gomes

Founder Member
He is the founder of the Orango Investment Corporation and co-founder of New African Capital Partners. He is currently chairman of the advisory board of the Africa-Southeast Asia Chamber of Commerce (ASEACC), co-chairman of the Afrochampions initiative, and a member of the board of directors of the African Union's COVID-19 special fund. He is also a member of the steering committee of the Pan African Conservation Trust (APACT). M. Gomes is one of the founding members of the African Finance Corporation and sits on the board of the Green Climate Fund. He was also appointed a Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the NTU-SBF Center for African Studies.

Joao Conduto Jr.

João Adriano Conduto Júnior, born in Bissau, has a remarkable academic background in Chemical Engineering and Economics. He began his professional career at the FIMA factory (Unilever) and, over the years, has held various positions. He worked as an advisor to the Government of Portugal, working directly with the Minister of Equipment, Planning, and Territorial Administration. He has also worked as a consultant for the company I.C.L., now known as Fujitsu. He is a university researcher at the University of Lisbon and U. Aberta in Portugal.

Waldir Araujo

Waldir Araújo, born in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau, is a journalist with a career that has spanned since 1996 and led him to join RTP (Rádio e Televisão de Portugal) in 2001. His passion for literature has resulted in the publication of two notable books: "Admirável Diamante Bruto & Outros Contos" (Livro do Dia, 2008) and "O Jardim da Celeste" (Editorial Novembro, 2023). The latter novel received the José Carlos Schwarz Literary Prize 2022, awarded by the Brazil-Guinea-Bissau Cultural Center/Instituto Guimarães Rosa, solidifying his status as an outstanding Lusophone writer.

Carla Adao

Born in Luanda, Angola, in 1971, she has a degree in Social Communication and a post-graduate degree in international journalism. She began her career at the newspaper Diário de Notícias and has been an integral part of RTP since 1997, having been one of the pioneers of RTP-Africa. Over the years, she has held various positions, including journalist, anchor, and coordinator, and is currently the channel's deputy director.
As a journalist, she has excelled in covering important events, such as elections in countries like Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, and São Tomé and Príncipe, as well as reporting on the political-military conflict in Guinea-Bissau in 1998-99. In addition to her work in journalism, she is a committed activist in the fight against female genital mutilation, collaborating with organizations such as P&D Factor and the Committee for the Abandonment of harmful practices in Guinea-Bissau.

Paulo Freire Monteiro

Paulo Freire Monteiro is an electrical and computer engineer from the University of Porto, a member of Amnesty International and a volunteer with Médecins du Monde, a founding member of the LIVRE party, a founding member of the Association of Former Students and Friends of the Kwame NKrumah National High School in Bissau, a founding member of Anastacia - Centre for Decolonial Studies and Research. He currently works as a specialist in electronic security systems.

Sidonio Pais

Sidónio Pais do Vale Quaresma, better known as Sidó, is a forerunner of modern Guinea-Bissau music. Born in 1954, he has occupied a prominent place on the national and international music scene, alongside his "Voz D'oiro". Sidó began his musical career in 1972 as a member of the Capa Negra Orchestra, achieving prominence with the song "Kilis Ku Kata Murri". Later, in 1976, he moved to Lisbon, where he formed the Sabá Miniambá Orchestra and recorded two albums that were censored in his homeland.

Munira Ribeiro

Munira Jauad Ribeiro, with her extensive career, has played a crucial role in women's economic empowerment. Munira was Vice-President of the Association of Women for Economic Activity (AMAE) from 1996 to 2004 and chaired the Network of Women Entrepreneurs and Businesswomen (REMOE/GB/UEMOA). She also served as Vice-President of Women Entrepreneurs in the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (FME/CPLP/CE). Her dedication to women's empowerment is remarkable, and she is also president of the NGO Djissilin, which has run a school with over 400 students since 1995. Her impact on Guinea-Bissau is evident in her commitment and leadership in advancing the creation of economic opportunities for women.

Luisa Piette

Luísa Handem Piette is an entrepreneur specializing in media and business management whose career includes several senior positions in Information Technology, journalism, human rights and philanthropic work. Born in Guinea-Bissau in 1959, she currently resides in the United States.
She is Managing Director of LHP Communications, a consultancy founded in 1998 in Dallas, Texas, after having served as Public Relations Counselor for Northern Telecom.

Joacine Katar Moreira

Joacine Katar Moreira, a historian and politician born in Guinea-Bissau in 1982, is a prominent figure on the political and academic scene. With a Ph.D. in African Studies and a master's degree in Development Studies, she was an independent member of the Portuguese Parliament and a candidate for the European elections in 2019. Her areas of expertise include Gender Studies, violence, politics, and decolonization. As well as being the founder of INMUNE - the Institute of Black Women in Portugal, Joacine Katar Moreira has been an active voice in the public debate on colonialism, slavery, and racism. In politics, her agenda prioritizes the expansion of Constitutional Rights, the fight against racism and poverty, and actions against climate change, currently leading the organization ANASTÁCIA - Centro de Estudos e Intervenção Decolonial.

Carlos Lopes

Carlos Lopes is a prominent academic and expert in international affairs, currently teaching at the Mandela School of Public Governance at the University of Cape Town and at the Paris School of International Affairs at Sciences Po in Paris. In addition, he plays leading roles in several internationally renowned institutions, including the Overseas Development Institute and Chatham House, and is also a Founding Member of the International Council of Sciences. With extensive experience in the United Nations system, he has held influential positions such as Political Director to Secretary-General Kofi Annan and 8th Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.

Adelino Handem

Trustees Council
Adelino João Handem, born in Gadamael Porto, in the south of Guinea-Bissau, began his educational journey in Bissau, later completing higher studies in electrotechnics in Coimbra, Lisbon and Paris. Handem became involved in the PAIGC's clandestine network in Portugal, and in 1973, after the assassination of Amílcar Cabral, he joined the armed struggle for national liberation, making a significant contribution to the cause. He later played leading roles in state bodies, founded a company in the water and sanitation sector after retiring in 1992, and continued his commitment to development, actively participating in civil society organizations and projects in West Africa, as well as publishing relevant texts for various institutions.

Apolinario de Carvalho

Ambassador Apolinário Mendes de Carvalho is an experienced diplomat with a long history of representing Guinea-Bissau in various countries. He currently serves as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary in countries such as Angola, São Tomé and Príncipe, Mozambique, Equatorial Guinea, South Africa, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Republic of Congo. He also has a solid academic background, with a Ph.D. in Political Science and International Relations and an academic career that includes teaching and publishing relevant books in the field of international relations. 

Ismael M. de Medina

Ismael Mendes de Medina (born 02/09/1971, in Bissau), Lawyer. Graduated in Law from the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon. He has a post-graduate degree in Legal and Administrative Sciences from the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon. Ismael began his career as a lawyer at Miranda & Associados, in Portugal, in 2004, and settled in Guinea-Bissau in 2007, where he is currently head of the GB Legal office. Ismael Medina is a member of the Knights of Malta (KMFAP) in the Republic of Guinea-Bissau.

Zé Carlos
The Foundation Jose Carlos Schwarz hereinafter referred to simply as the FOUNDATION, is a legal person governed by private law, endowed with legal personality, non-profit making, and of general public utility. To promote, develop, and disseminate Guinean culture in its various domains, with special emphasis on music, theater, cinema, literature, and the plastic arts.
